The Master of the Flying Drum Machine was the second album we recorded. The first “Lo-Fi Songs From Hades” was put together on a single 4-track tape recorder, and while it wasn’t without its charms, it was hugely limited by the technology and my prior recording experience (which was nil).
With Master of The Flying Drum Machine we were able to record through two 4-track tape recorders which meant we had space for more overdubs, drum machine tracks etc. and I’d also come to realise that turning the inputs down when recording wasn’t always a bad thing. Having met Jay not long before recording was complete we were able to use his (vastly greater) knowledge and digital studio to add some final bells and whistles and polish it up.
It's a concept album of sorts, packed with tons of ideas. We basically recorded the best songs we had (new and old) added texture with extra guitar fx's, piano, and layering samples from b-movies, to try to make the best possible record from two spinning TDK60Minute cassettes as we could.
It still remains a crackly little lo-fi beast, but with Flips' aid, the songs, ideas and apocalyptic zombie backdrop were given much more room to breathe.
